Writing in Playboy magazine (it’s still a thing?) this month, William Wheeler takes a novel look at the old-car phenomenon in Cuba by delving into the world of illegal drag racing on the island. Since the advent of laws allowing formal ownership of vehicles, people in Cuba have been willing to invest more in their clunkers and improve performance enough to begin racing them. In a theme that runs throughout modern Cuban society, however, Wheeler writes of the growing gulf between those with access to the hard currency necessary to keep their cars running and those without.
