14ymedio this week takes a look at the booming business of English-language instruction in the Cuban capital. Where once students lined up to learn Russian, young Havana residents are paying 1 CUC an hour to learn the “language of the enemy.”
The trend is not entirely attributable to the December thaw. A more likely explanation is the rise of the cuentapropista economy allowing instructors to legally go into business for themselves. Even foreigners are getting into the business. One yuma who came to study in Cuba and ended up marrying a local promises to teach students an “authentic” New York accent, as well as obscenities and sexual slang if they are so inclined.
The report says Cubans have even done the unthinkable and starting signing up for English courses at the U.S. Interests Section. One 17-year-old said she was scared to go near the place before, but now sees the States as her future.
